Daily News - KZN set to thrill: "Kwazulu-Natal has the potential to become the adventure tourism capital of the world, local industry experts have said.
Staff at Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN) have an adrenalin rush when they think of how the growing adventure tourism market could be developed - and how many more tourists could be attracted to the region.
TKZN is busy developing a special adventure tourism plan that includes identifying the 'Awesome Five' - the five hottest activities in the province. Tourists could parasail off the Bulwer Mountain, climb The Bell in the Drakensberg, dive with the sharks at Aliwal Shoal, kayak through Thrombosis Gorge on the Umzimkhulu River and cycle with Grand Drakensberg Traverse. 'Globally, tourists have changed. They have become quite sophisticated and picky.
They don't just want to go to a beach destination and lie around for two weeks, take pictures and go home with a T-shirt,' said TKZN research manager Karen Kohler, who is developing the adventure tourism niche market strategy.
'They don't just want to be observers, they want to do something special - have an experience and take it home with them.
'Now they want to swim with the sharks; learn how to do Zulu dancing and drumming.'"
